Metro DC Transportation Tips

According to transportation statistics for the Metro DC area, just under half of the District’s workers drive alone to work with about fifteen percent of employees being a member of a community carpool. Over twenty-percent choose to take the Metro or Metrorail, and a little under ten percent ride the Metrobus. Metrorail is a rapid transit system that includes a network of tunnels and above-ground tracks with connecting stations in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. The Metro has six color-coded lines (red, orange, silver, blue, yellow, and green) that are connected by transfer stations and most stations are served by multiple lines, which operate 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Metrorail serves 98 stations and has 128 miles of track. Metrobus serves the nation's capital 24 hours a day, seven days a week with 1,500 buses. Metrorail and Metrobus serve a population of approximately 4 million people within a 1,500-square mile jurisdiction.
