Protection Options

Each year McKendree Moving & Storage employees have some of the lowest numbers of claims in the industry. Our employees are professionally trained and put pride in every move we perform. That being said, sometimes things happen. And, we want you to be protected.

Listed below are the options you have in determining the valuation for your upcoming move. Your selection will determine our financial liability should articles be lost, damaged or destroyed.

Option 1: FULL VALUE PROTECTION WITH A $100 OR $500 DEDUCTIBLE

This is the most comprehensive option. If an article is lost, destroyed or damaged while in McKendree's possession, we will repair the item, replace the item, or make a cash settlement. The value of this coverage must be assessed at a minimum of $6 per pound, but may be increased if you feel this value is insufficient. When a total value has been determined multiply that figure by $9 per $1,000 of value for the $100 deductible level, or multiply by $5 per $1000 of value for the $500 deductible level, and that will be the cost of this comprehensive option. The minimum declaration of value for any shipment is $20,000.

For example, a family is moving a 4 bedroom home estimated to weigh 10,000 pounds. The minimum coverage for their entire shipment is $60,000. They decide this total valuation to be sufficient, and choose the $500 deductible level. We then multiply $5 by 60 to calculate their cost of Full Value Protection to be $300.

Option 2: BASIC PROTECTION-RELEASED VALUE

This coverage is provided at no-additional-charge. In the event of loss or damage each article is covered for 60 cents per pound. A $100 deductible applies on all claims. This option is an industry standard as set forth by the United States Department of Transportation. Loss or damage claims are settled based on the pound weight of the article multiplied by 60 cents. It is considerably less than the average value of household or office goods. Give this option careful consideration. While it may be the most economical, it only provides minimum coverage.

For example, if your $2000 television which weighs 65 pounds were damaged during the move, you would be paid $39 (65 lbs x $.60). We know that this will not replace your television; so if this option is chosen, please carefully read your homeowner's insurance policy to ensure coverage, contact your insurance agent or a third party moving insurer to fully protect your goods.

Option 1 or 2: COVERAGE DURING STORAGE

Both options will cover you in and out of storage. If you select option 1, Full Value Protection, your account will be billed an additional 10% of your monthly storage cost. This continues your coverage while your shipment is in storage with us.

ACTIONS THAT LIMIT OUR LIABILITY

• Packing liquids or hazardous materials with your household goods.
• Packing your own boxes will save you money, but if a plate is broken your mover is not liable. McKendree is liable only for the boxes we pack.
• Failing to notify your mover in writing about articles of extraordinary value (china, crystal, antiques, art and electronics). Extraordinary value is any item valued at more than $100 per pound.
• Movers do not move jewelry or money and cannot take responsibility for their loss.
